The Entry concering the Gatling Gun in " Historical Times Illustrated Encyclopedia of The Civil War" is a primary source , this entry is for the reader or researcher who is intrested in furthing their research on The Gatling Gun. Summarizing the entry : This gun had limitied ussage in the American Civil War , and was not offically adopted by U.S. forces untill after improvements in the year 1866. This weapon was developed by Dr. Richard Jordan Gatling in 1861. Gatlings' reason for creating this gun ; My Dear Friend. It may be interesting to you to know how I came to invent the gun which bears my name; I will tell you: In 1861, during the opening events of the war, (residing at that time in Indianapolis, md.,) I witnessed almost daily the departure of troops to the front and the return of the wounded, sick, and dead. The most of the latter lost their lives, not in battle, but by sickness and exposure incident to the service. It occurred to me if I could invent a machine--a gun-- which could by its rapidity of fire, enable one man to do as much battle duty as a hundred, that it would, to a great extent, supersede the necessity of large armies, and consequently, exposure to battle and disease be greatly diminished. I thought over the subject and finally this idea took practical form in the invention of the Gatling Gun. Yours truly, R.J. Gatling "

"The Gatling Gun" By Patrick McSherry is an article that gives you a genreal and indeph view on Gatling Guns. The article also tells you the effects this gun had on the Spanish-American War. This entry also shows a way my innovation connects with Philadelphia , ". The gun was subject to a variety of problems, including jamming, and was modified at Cooper's Firearms Manufactory in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania".

NHD Riffling

According to "http://www.chuckhawks.com/rifle_barrel.htm" The purpose of rifling is to stabilize the bullet to increase its accuracy. This is called spin stabilizing, and works because of gyroscopic forces acting on the spinning bullet during flight. American rifle barrels traditionally spin bullets to the right. Rifling is the process or operation of cutting spiral grooves in a rifle barrel to cause the bullet to spin and accurately hit its target.

NHD Project : Changed

My group and I have decided to change our NHD topic from solar energy to the Colt Single Action Army which is sometimes nicknamed Colt 45 , possibly because it shoots a .45 cartridge. The Colt Single Action was a weapon used only by American forces , it was used in the Spanish-American War and several small wars with Native-Americans. In 1873 it was adopted as the standard military pistol. This weapon was in service from 1873 to 1892. This weapon was developed by Colt's Manufacturing Company , in America.

or

The M1911 Pistol , which is a semi.-automatic weapon. This gun also has the nickname of Colt 45. It has seen many wars including WWI , WWII , Korean War , and Vietnam War.  In 1911 this weapon the standard United States pistol from 1911 to 1985 , although it is still used by the United States troops unofficially to this day. This weapon was developed in the U.S. in 1911 by John M. Browning , whom is credited for 128 gun patents.

*I'm not positive which gun we are doing yet because both guns have the nickname colt 45 , and my group members said we're doing the " colt 45 ", I will find out today and post my dession tomorrow.*

Update: For our project we chose the M1911.
